Savoy Hotel:
Located on The Strand in the heart of the West End theatre district, and on the Thames River, this landmark hotel opened in 1889 and is still considered to be the place to stay in London.
Built in 1889 on land given to the Count of Savoy by Richard III. It was one of the first hotels to have electric lighting and lifts installed. The street used to access the Savoy (Savoy Court) is the only street in England on which one would drive in the right. There's a story that says that the Post Office once had a letter addressed to the "Best Hotel in London", so they forwarded it to the Savoy. In 1953 Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, and The Savoy threw what was considered the ball of the century on the evening of Coronation day. Throughout the following decades everyone who was anyone continued to stay at The Savoy; Elizabeth Taylor & Nicky Hilton on their Honeymoon, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, etc...
